Division B, Part 8 governs qualifying on-site sewage systems with total daily design sewage flow of 10,000 litres or less, located wholly on the property they serve. It addresses site evaluation, design, installation, operation and maintenance.
The Building Code Act, 1992 and current Ontario Building Code apply. A sewage-system permit may be required for new installations, replacements and repairs. Selwyn Township’s Building Department administers private sewage systems in Lakefield; other locations may have a different authority.
Design considers sewage flow, soil, groundwater, bedrock and required clearances from wells, buildings, property lines and surface water. Applicable designer and installer qualifications and registration must be confirmed for the scope.
Coordinate required inspections with the issuing authority and leave the work exposed at the stages it requires. Larger or otherwise excluded systems may need provincial environmental approvals instead of the Part 8 permit route.
